Dale A. Howard, 81 of Iowa Falls, died Friday, January 30, 2015 after a valiant battle with cancer. He was surrounded with love at death by his wife of 61 years, Marilyn Howard and his children.


The Howard family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Coaches vs. Cancer (American Cancer Society) and / or the Iowa Falls First United Methodist Church.

Dale was born September 24, 1933 in Brayton, IA to his parents Edgar and Ruth Howard. He had two brothers and two sisters.

After graduating from Lewis High School in 1951, Dale attended The University of Iowa, graduating in 1955 with a degree in physical education. He married his high school sweetheart Marilyn (Marshall) on June 19,1953. He served our country proudly during the Korean Conflict, serving in the Army in Germany from 1955-57. He began a family with Marilyn in 1954, having sons Steve and Scott, and twin daughters, Diane and Donna.

After returning home Dale began his career as a teacher and coach in Bridgewater, IA in 1957. He also coached in Creston, IA at Creston High School and Creston Junior College, taking his team to the NJCAA tournament in Hutchinson, KS in 1961. After a short stint out of coaching, he returned to coach basketball at Iowa Central C.C. in Ft. Dodge, IA from 1967 to 1973. He was proud to influence the lives of many young men during his coaching career.

Dale entered the business world in 1973, and purchased a car dealership in Iowa Falls, IA in 1975, Dale Howard Chevrolet. That dealership blossomed into what is today known as Dale Howard, Inc, which sells a unique combination of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Ford, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep all under the same roof.

Dale proudly served on many Iowa Falls boards and committees. He was an active member of Iowa Falls First United Methodist Church. He was a proud supporter of his alma mater, The University of Iowa, Ellsworth CC, University of Northern Iowa and Iowa State University. He served as state of Iowa chairman for Coaches vs. Cancer, and was honored inducted as an honorary member of the Iowa Letterman's Club.

Dale was also a devoted philanthropist, supporting many endeavors throughout the state of Iowa. Most noted were the Dale Howard Family Activity Center at Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls; the Dale and Marilyn Howard Family Pavilion at the University of Iowa, and the Dale and Marilyn Howard Family Basketball Performance Center at the University of Northern Iowa.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, his brother David Howard, his sister Barbara Norman and his son-in-law Wayne Embree.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn, brother Dick, sister Elizabeth and his four children: Steve Howard (Glenda), Diane Gulick (Richard), Donna Embree and Scott Howard (Kathy). He is also survived by five grandchildren: Traci Wagner (Jason), Eric Beer (Carissa), Tony Howard (Julianne), Todd Holland and Marcus Beer (Jenna). He had ten great grandchildren: Nicholas and Sydney Wagner of Iowa City; Brecken, Kemper and Benson Beer of Des Moines; Prentice and Pierce Howard of Iowa Falls, and Kenley, Cohen and Ivy Beer of Iowa Falls.
