Walter Singles was born at West Point, the son of Walter Singles, USMA Class of 1903. He entered the United States Military Academy on July 1, 1937 at age 21. Upon graduation he received his commission as a second lieutenant with the Coast Artillery Corps. In late summer 1941 he was a student in the basic course at the Coast Artillery School at Fort Monroe. After graduation from the school he was assigned to various coastal defense units. By summer 1942, he was an anti-aircraft artillery officer on duty in Puerto Rico with the Antilles Air Defense Command. At the end of World War II, he returned to the United States and was assigned to Fort Bliss in Texas, first with an anti-aircraft training unit. He was then assigned to an Army Ordnance development group in the early phases of the Army’s rocket development program. In 1947, he resigned his commission. After leaving the United States Army, he was with the SKF Bearing Company in Philadelphia. By 1954 he graduated with distinction from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and earned a Master of Business Administration Degree with specialization in industrial engineering. Over the next twelve to fifteen years, he traveled throughout the United States as a management consultant for several firms based in Pittsburgh. While with H.B. Maynard from 1956 to 1961, he was noted as specially talented and earned the firm’s presidential award for excellence. He was highly regarded and that there was something noble about his integrity and dedication to mission accomplishment.
In 1968, with R.O. Ferguson Associates, he retired from his position as a full-time management consultant. For the next few years he was a free-lance consultant for various other firms in the Pittsburgh area. He died suddenly on June 10, 1983. In July 1983, he was interred in the West Point Cemetery beside his mother and father.
