Hugh Stanaland and his wife, Ruth L. Massingill Underwood Stanaland, were traveling through Hamilton County's Warlene Valley south of the Leon River on July 9, 1867, when a group of Comanche Indians attacked them. Hugh was killed.

About a mile away, the Comanches had attacked the Leon River School, killing the teacher, Ann Whitney, and kidnapping a Kuykendall boy, who was later retrieved.
