Elizabeth Whitear Sermon Camm, born May 14, 1819, Preston Candover, Hampshire, England, daughter of John Whitear and Rachel Hedgecock. Married Joseph Simon Sermon, 11 September 1844, St. Mary, Newington, Surrey, England. After her conversion to the Mormon faith, Elizabeth Emigrated to U.S.A with her husband and children on the ship Caravan. They arrived at Castle Island, New York, on March 27, 1856. The Sermon family left Florence, Nebraska after a delayed departure on August 27th, 1856 as a part of the Martin Handcart Company whose tragic trek across Nebraska, Wyoming and Utah has been well chronicled. Elizabeth and her injured children survived the journey but her husband Joseph Simon Sermon died on the plains and was buried in a common grave with nine other men at Red Bluffs, Wyoming. Elizabeth settled in Cache Valley, Utah, where she married merchant Robert Jobes Camm. After a falling out with local church leaders in the 1880's, Elizabeth and Robert, with their daughter Caroline, left Utah and moved to San Francisco, where she died in 1893. Originally, Elizabeth was interred in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, in San Francisco. However, during the 1930's all of the remains at that cemetery were placed in 2 foot by 3 foot boxes and were moved to the Greenlawn Memorial Park in Colma, California. Any records of where Elizabeth was re-interred are not available and her grave is not marked. However, her burial date and previous plot at the IOOF cemetery in San Francisco match the records of Elizabeth "Cann" who is listed as having been buried at Greenlawn.
