James C. Clough, for Many Years a Prominent Resident, Died Thursday - Funeral Held Sunday
The death of James C. Clough occurred Thursday night about twelve o'clock at his residence in this village. He was born April 28, 1849, in the town of Salem but soon after moved to the farm east of the village now occupied by his son, Will Clough. Here he resided most of his life until nine years ago, when he moved to the village. Over twenty years ago he met with a serious accident from which he suffered all his subsequent life. He bore his suffering with great patience, Christian fortitude and triumphant faith. He was one of the oldest member of the Baptist church, and was much interested in all that pertained to its welfare. He was twice married, his first wife dying in early life.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Baptist church, conducted by Rev. C. A. Johnson, and were largely attended. A quartet consisting of Mrs. Newcomb S. Pratt, Miss Blanche Wilkinson, George Randles and Charles S. Hutchen, with Mrs. Randles at the organ, sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye." The bearers were his four sons, Elijah J., George, James and William. A profusion of flowers were sent as tributes by friends of the deceased. The interment was in the Salem cemetery.
The survivors are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Albert Crawford of Argyle, Mrs. Grover Campbell of Albany, and Mrs. William Stewart of this place; five sons, Charles of Cambridge, Elijah J. of Schenectady, George of Fort Miller, James of South Argyle and William Clough of this place. Several grandchildren and two brothers, William A. Clough of West Hebron and Elijah Clough of this place also survive.
