ODESSA Jimmie Louise Hughes, age 93, of Odessa, passed away Friday, January 30, 2015.
She was born July 7, 1921, to LeeRoy and Lela (Sechrist) Swanner in Stephens Co, TX.
She married William Vernon Hughes on July 13, 1938, in Breckenridge, TX.
She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church.
After being a housewife 40 years and raising three children, she began a career as a hostess/supervisor in the Dietary Dept. of Medical Center Hospital to establish her own retirement and making new lifelong friends.
Her great love of her church and her beliefs was evident. She and her sister helped establish the Odessa Primitive Baptist Church 62 years ago. She was even determined too, that for over 60 years she continued going to church and driving herself up until she was 92.
Her great love of her family was evident in the relationship of her and her closest sister Marie Hawkins and the life-long relationships of each other's' families.
She and her husband traveled a lot after she retired. The hardest obstacle she overcame was the loss of her first born in 1993. Her thoughts were that a child shouldn't die before the parent. After severe health problems, she lost her husband in 1999.
She had a strong independent personality. She maintained her home by herself until age 93, until the onset of dementia the last six months of her life.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son William Jack Hughes, two brothers Roy Swanner and Jake Swanner, and three sisters Lorannie Jones, Nellie Nelson, and Marie Hawkins.
She is survived by her son Gary D. Hughes and wife Suzanne of Heath, TX; and daughter Evelyn Kay Meurer and husband Jerry of Odessa, who was privileged to live next door to her for 32 years; nine grandchildren, Terry, Troy, Zack, Jamie, Heather, Linda, Peggy, Laura, and Raymond; and sixteen great-grandchildren, and her beloved 4-legged companion, Missy.
