A retired School Bus Driver for the Parish of East Baton Rouge with 25 years of service, Leah died at 4:30 am on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at Heritage Manor of Baton Rouge under the loving care of Life Source Hospice. She was born on June 29, 1919 in Hope Villa, the daughter of Joseph Leslie Aucoin and Rosa Keller Aucoin. Leah graduated from Seventh Ward School (now Woodlawn). She was married to Eugene Wilson Shaffer, Jr., the love of her life. She and her husband had 50 happy years together until his death in 1989. Out of this union, two children were born, a son, Eugene Wilson Shaffer III, and a daughter, Brenda Rose Shaffer. Leah was a longtime member of Florida Boulevard Baptist Church and the Esther Sunday School Class. She was a beautiful person with beautiful hands, hands that created so many wonderful things like those beautiful baby shoes, bibs and blankets. In her later years, Leah spent hours crocheting baby caps for her church to send to missions throughout the world. Visitation will be at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East chapel, 11000 Florida Blvd, on Thursday, Jan. 29th, from 9 am until religious services at 11 am conducted by the Rev. Joey Beeson. Interment will follow in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. She is survived by her two children; Eugene Wilson Shaffer III and his wife Martha and Brenda Shaffer Fairchild and her husband James; four grandchildren, Robert Shaffer and wife Pam, Laurie Shaffer Scivicque and husband Brian, James C. Fairchild II and wife Erin and Melissa Fairchild Michiels and husband Mark; three great-grandchildren, Morgan Michiels, James C. Fairchild III and Brett Scivicque; step-grandchildren, Joy Smith, Jeffrey Wallace and Joel Wallace; a sister, Rita Aucoin Grant and husband F.W,; niece, Barbara Aucoin; and numerous other nieces and nephews. Leah was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Wilson Shaffer, Jr; parents, Joseph Leslie Aucoin and Rosa Keller Aucoin; brother, Ray E. Aucoin, Sr and wife Gloria; and a step-grandson, James Lee Wallace. Pallbearers will be Bob Shaffer, James Fairchild II, Mark Michiels, Brian Scivivque, Joel Wallace and Mike McGuire. Honorary pallbearers will be Keith Brown, Gene Shelburne and Jeffrey Wallace. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
