Robert V. Domencetti
April 20, 1937 - December 27, 2014

Robert “Bob” V. Domencetti, 77 of Salem, Ohio died of natural causes at home, the morning of Saturday December 27, 2014.

He was born on April 20, 1937, in Salem, the son of the late Vincent and Pauline (Nutial) Domencetti. He lived in Columbia Station, Ohio and Centerport, New York, before returning to Salem.

Bob graduated from Salem High School in 1955. He earned a Bachelor of Music Education from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1959 where he was honored as an “Outstanding Music Alumnus” in 1990. He earned his Master of Education from Kent State University in 1968. Bob moved to Columbia Station in 1960 where he was band director at Olmstead Falls High School and then Berea High School for 14 years. His bands consistently received the state’s highest ratings at both District and State Competitions, were honored as the “Ohio Band of the Year” and were invited to tour Mexico.

Bob was a member of the Ohio Music Education Association. He served as an adjudicator for solo/ensemble competitions as well as District and State Competitions. In 1973, Bob moved to Centerport where he was Director of Music for Harborfields School District and Band Director at Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York until his retirement in 1999. Bob established Harborfields as one of the premiere marching bands on Long Island. While in New York, Bob was an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music at Queens College, Past President of SCMEA and NYSCAME-Suffolk and former Suffolk County Representative to NYSSMA. Bob was also Music Director of the Huntington Community Band from 1988 until 2003. He guest conducted many Suffolk and Nassau All-County Bands, the NorthFork, Mid Island and Hampton Music Festival Bands, the Nassau Pops Orchestra and, annually, the Northport Community Band.

After returning to Salem, he directed the Salem Community Band and guest conducted the Quaker City Band and Strongsville Community Band and worked with the Salem High School Band. Aside from having a superb conducting style (a rare “lefty”), he was an outstanding clarinetist. He had a great passion for golf, sailing and gardening. He was a loving husband to his hometown sweetheart Becky (who passed away in August) and a devoted father and grandfather.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Salem, and Centerport United Methodist Church in Centerport, the Elks, the Salem Golf Club, Salem High School Alumni Association and enjoyed singing in church choirs and perfroming in community musicals.

He is survived by four children; Jamae (Peter) Tschenkel of Sterling, VA, Charles (Maria) Domencetti of Centerport, New York, Karen (Tim) Lyons of Warrenton, VA and Ann-Marie (Tom) Chang of Kings Park, New York. He is also survived by four sisters, Joan Utt of Lisbon, Ohio, Lois (Dick) Dorazio of Warren, Ohio, Debra Domencetti of Indianapolis, IN, and Terri (Fred) Denton of Salem and six grandchildren; Julianne (Jason) (Tschinkel) Brown, Nicole Tschinkel, Daniel Tschinkel, Arianna Domencetti, Jessica Domencetti and Ethan Chang.
