Joel was the son of Jared & Henrietta (Tuttle) Dickerman of Hamden. He was a corporal in the 20th Connecticut Inf., Co. I. and was mortally wounded at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863.
This monument, shared with sister Ann, serves as a cenotaph. Joel is buried in the Connecticut plot at the Gettysburg National Cemetery.
