BAKER, EMILY ASTON KENNEDY, age 73. Died January 29, 2015 in Nashville, of a hemorrhagic stroke. Born September 8, 1941 in Knoxville, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Augustus William Aston Kennedy and Lena Bernhardt Davis Kennedy.
She is survived by her husband, Carter Greenlaw Baker, to whom she was married June 1, 1963, at Church Street Methodist Church, Knoxville. She is also survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Faye Baker Davis (Fred) and their sons William Harrison Davis and Frederick Lowell Davis of Snellville, Georgia; and Robert Aston Baker (Candace Markum Baker) and Robert's daughter, Savannah Jo Truckenmiller Baker of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She is survived by her brothers: Lewis Edwin Kennedy (Janice) of Lenoir City, Tennessee and James Aston Kennedy (Janet) of Hixson, Tennessee, and sisters-in-law Ailsie Faye Baker McEnteggart of Chico, California and Georgia Lowell Baker of Dickson, Tennessee. In addition, she has three step-grandchildren, whom she loved and treated as her own: Scott Truckenmiller of Atlanta, Georgia; Sarah Jane Truckenmiller McBay (Russ) of Dickson, Tennessee; and Shelby John Truckenmiller of Nashville.
Emily attended Sequoyah Elementary, Tyson Junior High, and was graduated from West High School in Knoxville in the Class of 1959. She was active in Girl Scouts and Mariners. In March 1963, she was graduated from The University of Tennessee-Knoxville with a degree in Mathematics and was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority.
After her marriage to Carter, she lived in Berlin, Germany and several places in the States during her life as an Army wife. In 1970, she moved to Nashville and soon became a pre-school teacher at Westminster Weekday Kindergarten. From 1990-1996, she lived in Bellevue, Washington.
Emily has enjoyed planning and remodeling her home of 44 years and similar projects at the Baker family farm, "Spring Valley", near Dickson. She was a founding member of the Richland-West End Neighborhood Association and has tirelessly researched the interesting corners of her family history. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and several other historical and genealogical organizations. A life-long Methodist, she was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church, where her great-great-grandfather, Thomas Stringfield, served as preacher in the 1820s.
The life of this wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and sister whose quiet determination influenced many, will be remembered and honored at a funeral service at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home, 201 25th Avenue, South. Services will be conducted by the Reverend Stephen Handy of McKendree United Methodist Church. The service will be Monday, February 2 at 1 PM with visitation before the service beginning at 11 AM.
