Samuel was the son of Martha Naomi Martin (1784-1824), who died in childbirth when Samuel was only two years old, and Charles C. Hammond, who remarried a year later.

David - 1824-1824

When Samuel was 26 he married Mary Ann "Polly" Murdock on May 14, 1848 in Butts County, Georgia.

Cynthia Elizabeth Hammond - 1853–1943
James Taylor Hammond - 1856–1943
Martha N. "Mattie" Hammond - 1858-1945
Mary Jane "Mollie" Hammond - 1860–1940
Frances Josephine "Josie" Hammond - 1863–1959
Samuel Lee Hammond - 1867-after 1880
Christopher Columbus "Lum" Hammond - 1869–1935

Samuel, fought for the Confederacy in the 10th Regiment, Georgia Infantry Company K.

Samuel was a beloved member of the community where he was known as "Uncle Sam." He lived until July 5, 1900, when he died at the home of his daughter, Cynthia Elizabeth Hammond Wright, after having been sick for many months. Samuel was buried at the Hammond family cemetery on his old homestead in Spalding County, Georgia on July 6th.
