- "The Science of Government Founded on Natural Law", 1841 (Publisher: Dean & Trevett, New York) This work is believed by many to have been the direct model for the 1848 "Communist Manifesto" of Karl Marx & Frederick Engels. Although he wrote a few other works, he is remembered today for this one. A popular story is that he and Horace Greeley were members of a secret society named "Illuminati".

He was involved in the creation of the "Loco Foco Party" (AKA: "Equal Rights Party") in 1835.

He served in the New York State Assembly from 1837 to 1840.

In the 1850s he invented a warship design, and was an early advocate of rights for inventors. "New York Times", March 4, 1853 - Page 8, & March 31, 1893 - Page 9

During the Crimean War, he was an official courier for dispatches between St. Petersburg, Paris, Vienna, & Berlin.

He was part of the family that included Presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt, & Theodore Roosevelt.

At his death, his home in New York City was 411 West 23rd Street.
