Lorna Lei Katoa, known as "Grandma Lei," was born in Pahala in Ka’u County on the Big Island of Hawaii to a ranching family of paniolos, which is Hawaiian cowboys.

“Lei” graduated from Punahou High School and attended the University of Hawaii at Manoa and then Church College of Hawaii, currently known as BYU Hawaii.

Lei was a member of the University of Hawaii Canoe Club paddling outrigger canoes. While at the University of Hawaii, she participated in the musicals of “South Pacific” and “Carousel.”

Lei performed at the International Marketplace in Waikiki and met her beloved husband at CCH and later married Latu Inoke Katoa in the Laie Hawaii Temple. He preceded in death.

She leaves to cherish her memory: five daughters, three sons, their spouses, twenty-six grandchildren, and twenty-seven great-grandchildren.

Lei tutored children with special needs and was a member of the Utah Hawaiian Civic Club promoting Hawaiian culture, Hula, and language. She also retired from American Express.

She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, belonging to the Sun Ridge Ward and formerly the Jordan North Fourth Ward.

Lei filled her life with sacrifice, hard work, and heartfelt service by volunteering for Utah Aging Services and delivering boxes to the elderly.

She surrounded her life with beautiful music and was talented at teaching and playing the piano and the organ in church and shared this joy with many children.

She was a sweet, giving, inspiring, and amazing mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all.

She resided in West Valley City and Kearns.

Lei passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 24, 2015. May she rest in peace.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2015 in the Sun Ridge Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 5422 South Sarah Jane Drive (5240 West) in Kearns. A viewing/apo was held at the church on Friday, January 30, 2015 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. and prior to the services on Saturday from 8:00 until 10:30 a.m.
Lei was laid to rest following the conclusion of the funeral services at Redwood Memorial Estates Cemetery in Taylorsville.
