May M. Carrell Gone Hiking. May was born Jan. 24, 1916 to Jesse and Bretta Pendleton (Shell) in the Peshastin area of Eastern Washington, where her father had his homestead. She was the oldest of 9 children, outliving all but her youngest sister, Donna Burnett. She was to later marry, and move to the Tacoma area in 1942. She was a teacher in the Tacoma school system, teaching special-ed kids, retiring in 1961. She loved her flowers, hiking in the mountains, and camping out with family. She continued to read and collect books, an interest inspired by her father and passed on to her four children. May died on the day after her 99th birthday. She is survived by daughter Audrey Skrzyniarz, and sons Neil Carrell and Robert Carrell. Her 4th child, Michael, died in 2013. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A small closed-casket service will be held at Weeks Dryer Funeral Home Feb. 6th at 1pm.
