Howard E. "Buck" Buchanan, 92, longtime resident of Newbury Park, passed away January 23, 2015 in Northridge, CA from complications of pneumonia.
Howard, when asked where he was born would say, " 441 11th Street front upstairs bedroom," in Durango, Colorado to William Buchanan and Grace Sullivan Buchanan. Howard loved growing up in Durango and especially the La Plata Mountains. His family were ranchers, lumbermen and miners. When he was a boy he enjoyed working on the ranch and had fond memories of the short cattle drives from the mountains near Durango to the winter range near Allison CO. He worked alongside the men from a young age and accepted responsibilities and his mother would always say that, "Howard was born old," Howard graduated from Durango High School participating in many sports excelling in football, track and gymnastics. He attended Regis College in Denver playing football there. His time at Regis was cut short as most of his class enlisted in the military at the start of World War II. Following in his father's footsteps he enlisted in his beloved Marine Corps and served from 1942 to 1946. He served in the South Pacific and was a member of the Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans. He ended his enlistment at El Toro Marine Base.
In 1944 he married his hometown sweetheart Lena in Long Beach Ca. and they recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in August of 2014. Their marriage was a testament to love, commitment and family.
After his discharge he worked different jobs including co-owning a gas station/garage in Santa Ana Ca. He then started his career with the City of Los Angeles Survey Department. After different positions and promotions he found his calling in the Street Maintenance Division and eventually retired as a Superintendent. He showed respect and received respect from all who worked with him or for him. He made many friends that he enjoyed into retirement.
After the military and living in Santa Ana, Buck and Lena resided in Los Angeles until the last move to Newbury Park in 1969. He was a parishioner at St. Julies Parish in Newbury Park and an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He also was involved in the VFW and delivered Meals on Wheels for a number of years. He was always a jokester and ready with a funny remark. He had great fun with his swim group, "Twinges-n-Hinges" at the YMCA.
He is survived by his wife Lena, daughter Diane (Jim), son Bill (Debi). Grandchildren Jeff (Gina), Matt (Heather), Greg and Kelly (Jason). Great Grandchildren Jolene, Maya, Jake, Jessica, Madeline, Brett and Andrew.
Howard was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He was patient, generous and understanding and helpful to all who needed him. He was the life of the party, his humor and outgoing nature made him friends wherever he went.
