Quincy Edward Scott
Dec. 5, 1919 - Jan. 20, 2015
Resident of Santa Cruz

While living at home, Quincy Edward Scott, known as "Scotty" died peacefully on January 20, 2015. Born to Molly Mae Gilbert and David Sol Scott on December 5, 1919 in Cottondale Florida, he was the 7th out of nine children. Scotty was raised on a farm in Florida. He drove the truck on the farm at a very young age. Scotty bragged that was the reason he was such a good driver.

At the age 17 he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp which sent him west to Santa Cruz, CA. He met Bernice Thrasher, his loving wife of 60 years and married her in 1942. Later that year, in October, he entered the service. Scotty was a part of "The Greatest Generation" where he proudly served in the Navy during World War II. He built torpedoes on three submarines and served on the USS Blackfin, USS Gar, and USS Charr. He was nicknamed "Swamp Rat" by his fellow Navy peers. While in the service, Scotty wrote his beloved wife daily. To this day the family has kept these cherished letters they shared during his military service.

His daughter, Judie, was born in February 1943 while he was at sea. Scotty did not get to meet his daughter until she was nine months old, and then didn't get to see her again until she was three when the war ended. Following his service in the war, Scotty and Bernice settled in Gilroy, CA for about ten years. Their son Steve was born in Gilroy in 1952. He and Bernice then moved to Cupertino where he worked as a truck driver for thirty years, twenty of which was for Permanente Cement Co. After he retired from truck driving, he worked for APPLE. Scotty and Bernice eventually made their way to Santa Cruz where they retired.

He enjoyed a good game of cards in San Jose at Garden City Casino and driving his truck over Highway 17 until just a few years ago. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Bernice. His only surviving sibling is Golden Scott. He is survived by his daughter Judie Fassio (Don) and son Steve Scott (Sharon) and granddaughters, Kristi, and Lisa (Greg) and six great grandchildren: Travis, Corey, Chase, Morgan, Shayne and Taylor. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the wonderful staff at PAMF and VNA nurses. Scotty was blessed to have wonderful caregivers which allowed him to stay at home. Louie, who spent four years with Scotty, was very special to him. His weekend caregiver, Gary, spent a several years taking care of him as well.

Funeral services at Habing Family Funeral Home in Gilroy will be held at 1:00 pm, followed by a graveside service at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park on Saturday, January 31st.
