Artist. He produced several original and good-humored political cartoons and caricatures for "Punch" with which he was associated between 1851-1901. He is fundamentally remembered today for his illustrations for Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass." His most evident American counterpart would be John R. Neill, illustrator of Frank F. Baum's "Land of Oz" series. When he retired from the service of "Punch" in January 1901, he received the honor of a farewell banquet (June 12) at which Mr. A. J. Balfour, then Leader of the House of Commons, exalted a description of Tenniel as "a great artist and a great gentleman" was applauded by the press of the whole country. He received a Knighthood in 1893, as a recommendation conferred upon him by William Ewart Gladstone.
