Maj. Carl Ray “Coach” Blakemore, USAF retired, age 79, of Castroville, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 28, 2015 in San Antonio. Carl was born Feb. 20, 1935 in Madill, OK to Allen and Essie Blakemore.

In 1953 he graduated from Madill High School. He then went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force, retiring as major. His second career began after he earned a BS in Education from SWTSU. For eighteen years he was a teacher and coach at Medina Valley High School. He was an assistant coach for the 1984 MVHS State Champion Football Team. He was head basketball coach and also coached many other sports. He was currently a MVISD School Board Trustee and was serving his second term on the board

Carl was a very active member of St. Louis Catholic Church, serving as an usher at 10:30 mass, and a member of the St. Louis Society. He was the District Administrator for the Little League Baseball for many years and he spent many years coaching youth sports. Carl was involved in many other community activities. He loved spending time with his kids and grandkids more than anything.

On July 3, 1955 he married the love of his life Martha Byrd Smith and they were married for 55 years. She preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 2011. He was also preceded in death by his parents, son, Edmond Ray Blakemore; grandson, Douglas Blakemore, Jr. and brother, Webb Blakemore.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, David and Valarie Blakemore of Alexandria, VA, Douglas and Andree´ Blakemore of New Orleans, LA, Darwin and Annie Blakemore of Ashton, MA, Dawn Rae and Terry Groff of Castroville; grandchildren, Brendan Blakemore, Brigid Blakemore, Fiona and Brian Flax, Kieran Blakemore, Deborah Blakemore, Daniel Blakemore, Therese and Grayson Gremillion, Sidney Blakemore, Sara Blakemore, Stephanie Blakemore, Eve Blakemore, Eddie Blakemore, Amy Blakemore, Benjamin Blakemore, Haley Blakemore, Riley Groff and Samuel Groff; great grandsons, Christian and Andre Gremillion and sister, Wilma Kniesel of Tifton, GA.
