Actor. Best remembered for his roles as Basil of Baker Street and Bartholomew in "The Great Mouse Detective." Born Barrie Stanton Ingham in Halifax, West Riding of Yorkshire, England, he was educated at Heath Grammar School and enlisted in the British Army as a Royal Artillery officer. After serving in the military, he made his acting debut in Manchester with the Library Theatre Company and then moved to London's Old Vic Theatre. Throughout his career, he also performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Mermaid Theatre Company, and the Royal National Theatre. Outside of theatre, he acted in over 200 films and TV shows, including "The Caesars," "The Power Game," "Doctor Who," "The Avengers," "Murder, She Wrote," "Star Trek: The Next Generation, "A Challenge for Robin Hood," "The Day of the Jackal" and "John Kirby: Time Warrior." He is most remembered by younger audiences as the voices of Basil of Baker Street and Bartholomew in Walt Disney Animation Studios' 26th animated feature, "The Great Mouse Detective" (1986). He retired from acting in 2005. He passed away at his home in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He was 82.
