Russell C. Goedjen, age 88, currently a resident of the Hamilton Memorial Home,
Two Rivers, died on Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at Hamilton Memorial Home.
Russell was born on May 24, 1919, in Two Rivers, son of the late Clarence and
Wally (Galecki) Goedjen. He attended Two Rivers public schools, graduating from
Washington High School, where he distinguished himself on the debate team. The
team won the state title in their senior year. Russ is a graduate of the
University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he majored in mechanical engineering and
was a drummer in the marching band. Russell married his high school sweetheart,
Marie L. Grumann, on Feb. 14, 1942, before serving in World War II as a Navy
lieutenant in the Pacific.
Upon Russell's return from the war, he worked for George J. Meyer, briefly, in
Cudahy, before taking advantage of an opportunity to design, build and manage
a dairy farm in San Miguel Regla, Mexico. At that time Russ and Marie had three
small children. He enjoyed living in Mexico so much that in 1951 he started a
new career with Celanese, as a purchasing agent, and held various positions for
that firm, moving the family to various different cities in Mexico. Two
additional children were born in Morelia, Mexico, during these years. In 1961,
when the family was living in Mexico City, Mexico, he took an opportunity to
work for Falk Corporation as a plant superintendent.
In 1961, they returned to Two Rivers to the family farm on Highway 147. Russ
commuted to Milwaukee for several years while he continued to work for the Falk
Corporation. Their sixth child was born in Two Rivers, in 1964. In 1969, he
joined the Manitowoc Company, where he held various positions, retiring as
southworks superintendent in 1985. Russell was a member of the Two Rivers Elks
Lodge, Two Rivers Rotary, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He also
devoted many hours to the Two Rivers Historical Society.
