~FUNERAL HELD HERE FOR DR. E. G. MILLS

Funeral Services were held Tuesday afternoon in Mount Pleasant First Ward for Dr. Edwin George MILLS, 88, thought to be the oldest practicing optometrist in the United States. Dr. MILLS died of a heart ailment Saturday morning.

He was a graduate of the College of Optometry, South Bend, Indiana, in 1902. He had resided in Mount Pleasant since the age of 19 and had served this community as an optometrist for sixty years.

Born January 05, 1873 in Agburn, Berkshire, England, he was the son of Joseph and Jane Wilson MILLS. He married Violet FARNSWORTH, who later died. In July of 1929 he married Louise Phipps AVERETT in Denver, Colorado. She died July 29, 1954.

He was a member of the LDS Church and was a charter member of the Mount Pleasant Lions Club. He was a musician in his youth and performed at many local entertainments. When he first came to Mount Pleasant, he with his brothers operated a brick yard, making the brick for many of the building of that era. He left England in 1889 living first in Woods Cross and has made his home in Mount Pleasant since 1891.

Survivors include a son and daughter, DeVere MILLS, Burbank, California; Mrs. Elva DeCAMP, Mount Pleasant; four step-children, Dr. Dail P. AVERETT, Mrs. Allie (Lettie) CHRISTENSEN, both of Mount Pleasant; Mrs. Newell (Wanda) CURTIS, Moroni; Mrs. Eva LARSEN, Portland, Oregon; twenty-four grandchildren and forty-eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Joseph MILLS, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada and a sister, Mrs. Maud WEAVER of Venice, California.

Also surviving are two granddaughters, Mrs. Pauline LONGRE, La Canada, California, and Mrs. Beth GROSS, San Pedro, California; twenty-two step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and forty-two step-great-grandchildren.

P. William Reynolds of the First ward bishopric, presided at the Services; prayer at the home was given by A. L. Peterson; prelude and postlude music, Susan Sorensen, who was also accompanist for the musical numbers; vocal duet, VaLene Johansen and Magdalene Taylor; invocation, Bishop Reed Lasson of Fairview; speaker, V. H. Gunderson; vocal solo, Helen Rigby; speaker, S. M. Nielsen; remarks, Bishop Reynolds; vocal solo, Pearl Peterson; benediction, David S. Moss.

Burial was in Mount Pleasant City Cemetery directed by Ursenbach Funeral Home. Dr. Dail P. Averett dedicated the grave.

Pallbearers were Miles SORENSEN, Mayor David JORGENSEN, P.O. WILLCOX, Chesley R. CHRISTENSEN, Newell B. CURTIS and Allie CHRISTENSEN.
