He was born in Clarence, Erie Co., New York to John Durham Van Deventer and Mary Boyers. His two grandfathers: Peter Van Deventer and Jacob Boyers served in the Revolutionary War. He settled in Cass Co., Michigan in 1837. Married Miranda Salisbury on September 19, 1838 at the home of her father Robert O. Salisbury. They were the parents of four boys: Edwin and Erwin twins/1840, William/1842, Christopher Columbus/1845. Miranda may have died in childbirth as he married Rozilla Low on June 6, 1846. They were the parents of seven children: Mary E./1847, Martha/1848, Ellen J./1850, Eber R./1852, Isabella/1855, James A./1857, John. Rosilla died on September 27, 1858. Christopher married the third time Mrs. Ann Baker on December 1, 1858 and they had Mary Alice who was born in 1860. On February 11, 1875 he married for the fourth time Mrs. Elizabeth Braithwaite. Elizabeth died April 7, 1900 and was buried the next day persumably in Ellsworth Cemetery though there isn't a stone to mark the spot. This oversight may be due to Christophers' own death a few weeks later. He died at home on the original homestead which he had farmed since 1848. Christopher was also a carpenter/joiner. His death was due to a botched surgical procedure resulting in apoplexy.
