"Union's seventh president began his career as a mate on a round-the-world voyage of a sailing ship. His father, Alonzo Potter, Episcopal bishop of Pennsylvania and son-in-law of Eliphalet Nott, finally persuaded his son to enter Union college. In 1881 he was graduated and began at once his theological studies. The following year he was ordained deacon by his distinguished father. After a short period as a Civil war chaplain he was sent by Bishop Potter to carry on missionary work in the Lehigh valley of Pennsylvania. In 1866 he became the first professor of ethics in the newly founded Lehigh university. In 1871, following a brief period of pastoral work in Troy, Dr. Potter was chosen to head the college his grandfather had guided for so many years. In 1884, following 12 years of service to Union, Dr. Potter became president of Hobart college, in Geneva. His 13 years in Geneva terminated his active service to education; four years after his retirement from college duties he died, while on a visit to Mexico City." ["Schenectady Gazette" (Schenectady, NY), Friday, May 10, 1946, p. 14; a photograph of his portrait was included with the newspaper article]
