Stephen William Clayton Carey passed away on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, in Bethesda, MD at the age of 68 after a long battle with cancer.

Steve was a loving husband and protective father, a role model and industry leader, and a dear loyal friend, mentor and hero to many throughout his life. He enjoyed an illustrious 36 years as an association executive in the greater Washington DC area in the non-profit community. Prior to that, Steve spent 22 years serving his country, retiring as a full colonel in the U.S. Army.

Steve was born in Whittier, CA and attended Bellarmine College Preparatory, and the University of San Francisco for his bachelor's degree and later received his Ph.D. at Howard University.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 24 years, Karen Clayton Carey and daughter, Stephanie Clayton Carey; his dear mother-in-law Gerry H. Clayton; his two nieces, Brandice Carol Eslava and Karissa Phyllis Clayton; two grandnieces Gabrielle Love Eslava and LilliElizabeth Eslava; and grandnephew, Brantley Sewell Eslava, all of Gulf Shores, AL, and sister-in-law, Joanne Bujnoski Clayton of Pensacola, FL.

The memorial service is at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 30 at St. John's Episcopal Church, Norwood Parish, Chevy Chase, MD. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery with full U.S. military honors at a later date.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with much gratitude that memorial contributions in Steve's name be directed to the Holy Family Children's Home Orphanage in Bethlehem.
