Gary G. Wilcox, 74, of Rapid City, died Sunday, January 25, 2015 at Rapid City Regional’s Hospice House.
He was born in Mobridge, SD on February 27, 1940 to Lucius and Margaret Wilcox as one of 12 siblings. He was raised between Montana and South Dakota until he joined the Army in 1957.
There, he trained as a marksman, gunner, and Armor Intelligence Specialist. He then served in the 4th Armor Division in Germany until 1960.
In 1964, he married the love of his life, Duska (Dusty) Mortimer. Together, they had 2 boys and raised their family in Rapid City. For over 2 decades, he proudly worked for Chicago Northwestern Railroad as a carman.
Gary loved the game of pool and the comradery that he shared with what he considered his “second family.”
He played year round for teams at both the Eagles Club and TREA. He was known for having a lush garden that he shared with family and friends. From his years in Montana, he also enjoyed gold-panning and fishing.
Most recently, he spent his time building and driving his ‘33 Ford rat-rod and keeping a watchful eye over his grandsons. He has been described as being strong minded as well as strong bodied, with a streak of humor that endeared him to many. Grateful to have shared in his life are his survivors: loving sons, treasured grandsons, Tanner & Trevor ; and 5 beloved siblings, sisters, Nila , Avenella , Marva , Carol and one brother Jerome.
Honored to be accepted into the family are daughter-in-laws, Tara & LeAnne .
Happy to greet him home are those who preceded him in death including his parents, Lucius & Margaret Wilcox; devoted wife, Duska Wilcox; and siblings, Floyd Wilcox, Lloyd Wilcox, Geraldine Heady, Bud Wilcox, and Norma Simmons
