BRIGHAM CITY – Dean passed away unexpectedly Saturday, January 24, 2015, due to a severe head injury caused by a fall at his home.

He was born September 10, 1925 in Garland, Utah to Samuel and Maggie Leatha Wilding Richards. He attended grade school in Garland.
The family moved to Brigham City when Dean was 11 years old. He graduated from Box Elder High School and joined the Navy in November of 1943. He was stationed in Honolulu and Saipan during World War II. He was honorably discharged in March of 1946.
Dean married Lola Wight on July 17, 1946, in the Logan Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They had nine children: Steven (Pamela) Richards, Terry (Harold) Fillmore, Rex (Patsy) Richards, Lucille (Clarke) Fowers, Kathleen (Kevin) Bell, Kevin (Jeri) Richards, Irene (Ricky) Moore (deceased), Jay (Carri) Richards, Scott (Tina) Richards. After 32 years of marriage, Lola passed away.
Dean married Thora Hill Speth on April 3, 1979, in the Ogden LDS Temple. Six more children joined his family: Jed Speth (deceased), Pixie Armendariz, Tracie (LaMar) North, Lonnie Speth (deceased), Kim (Connie) Speth, and Janette (Bret) Scoffield.
Dean and Thora have two daughters: Mary Ballif (John Paul II), and Nancy (Ian) Ashcroft. There are 62 grandchildren and 97 great-grandchildren.
He was a High Priest in the Brigham City Tenth Ward where he served as finance clerk for 11 years. He served in the ward bishopric for 5 years and has been a scout master numerous times. Dean and Thora served an 18 month LDS mission at the Bishop's Storehouse.
Dean worked as an electrician for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the Brigham City for 27 years, retiring in February of 1980. He specialized in refrigeration and repaired appliances part-time in the Brigham City area for 50 years and also worked as an electrician with his son, Rex, in Cache Valley.
He enjoyed tinkering in his shop and loved to fish, enjoying many fishing trips with friends and family. His favorite thing to do was spend time with his family.
Dean is survived by his wife, Thora, brother (Lynn), sister (Faye), 14 children, 59 grandchildren and 96 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister (Wanda), daughter (Irene), son (Jed), son (Lonnie), 3 grandsons, and one great-grandson.
Services will be held on Monday, February 2, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the South Stake Center, 865 South 300 West, Brigham City, UT.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2015, in the evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Myers Mortuary, 205 S. 100 E., Brigham City, UT, and prior to the service on Monday between 9:30 to 10:40 a.m. at the Church.
Interment will be at the Brigham City Cemetery where Military Honors will be accorded.
