He was born in Fort Atkinson on June 22, 1947, the son of Weeden and Verna (Romig) Barnes. He graduated from Fort Atkinson High School in 1965.
Jack served his country as a staff sergeant in the Air Force as a member of 6981st Security Group, Elmendorf AFB, Anchorage, Alaska, from March 1970 to March 1974. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, graduating in 1976 with a BSE.
He worked at Butler/J-Star Manufacturing in Fort Atkinson for 33 years. He was an avid photographer throughout his life, finally turning his hobby into a business in 2005. He was half owner of WTJ Photography, specializing in weddings and senior portraits.
He enjoyed traveling and got to visit his beloved Alaska in 2002 for the “trip of a lifetime” to Denali National Park. He and Sue made one last trip to Alaska on a cruise in the summer of 2014.
Jack is survived by his wife, Sue Barnes of Fort Atkinson; daughter, Heather Barnes of Lawton, OK; son, Andrew Barnes of Cottage Grove; stepson, Christopher (Sara Low) Olsen of Cottage Grove; stepdaughter, Sarah Olsen of Milwaukee; brother, David Barnes of Jefferson; granddaughter, Maryn Olsen of Cottage Grove; his business partner and close friend, Jeanette Jones of Evansville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, Jan. 29, at the Dunlap Memorial Home in Fort Atkinson with the Rev. Chris Buckingham-Taylor officiating.
