Nick is the firstborn of eleven children born to Lorin Henry Thomas and Rose Matilda Davis. His younger siblings are Gertha Marie, William Price, Pearl Lucy, Helen, Dorothy, Glen E, Ila Rose, Billie Dee, Alene, and Jennetta Mable. Nick grew up in Teton, Idaho where his father was a farmer.
On October 29, 1932, Nick married Margaret Parker. They became parents to twin sons, Reed and Ross. Nick and Margaret divorced.
Nick spent some time in Montana were he worked in the mining industry before moving to Utah where Margaret had taken the twins when she remarried.

From The Post-Register (Idaho Falls, ID) - Tuesday, July 1, 1947:
BINGHAM CANYON, Utah - Lorin Henry Thomas, 40, a native of Wilford, Idaho, died Sunday while at work in a mine of the United States Smelting, Refining and Mining Company. Death was attributed to a heart ailment. Thomas came here three months ago from Kimberly, Nevada.
Survivors include a number of Idaho residents, among them, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lorin Thomas of St. Anthony; three brothers, Price, Billy, and Glenn, all of St. Anthony, and five sisters, Mrs. Gertha Rackham and Mrs. Dorothy Hansen, both of Teton; Mrs. Pearl Burbank of Newdale, and Mrs. Ila Harris and Miss Jeanetta Thomas, both of St. Anthony.
The body will be taken to St. Anthony for funeral services and burial.
