Kenneth Forthenbaker Jones was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware. After graduating from Wilmington High School in 1935, he attended two years at the University of Delaware. He transferred to the University of Maryland and graduated in 1940. In 1941, he applied for the U.S. Navy's V-7 program. After completing training at the U.S. Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School at Abbott Hall, Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois, Jones was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
Ensign Jones joined the U.S.S. Salinas (AO-19) on June 13, 1942. He served aboard the ship during the next few months as she performed refueling and resupply operations at American advance bases in the Canadian Maritime provices and Greenland.
On the morning of December 13, 1942, his ship sailed east from St. John's, Newfoundland. Shortly after midnight, Ensign Jones was severely injured in an accidental fall from the foremast of his vessel. He died at 0155 hours on December 14, 1942. His body was returned to his family and buried at Silverbrook Cemetery in Wilmington, Delaware.
