US Army Brigadier General. He was raised in Wisconsin, graduated from West Point in 1890, and was commissioned in the Cavalry. During the Spanish-American War he was a temporary Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 4th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He continued to serve in Cavalry assignments after the war, and graduated from the Army School of the Line in 1909 and the Command and General Staff College in 1910. He served in the Inspector General's department immediately prior to World War I, and at the start of the war he was promoted to Brigadier General. He commanded 75th Brigade, 38th Division and 83rd Brigade, 42nd Division during combat in France. After the war he returned to the Inspector General's Department. From 1921 to 1924 he was Chief of Staff for Sixth Corps Area, and from 1926 to 1927 he commanded the harbor defenses of the Philippines. He then commanded the harbor defenses on the Pacific coast, remaining in this post until retiring in 1931. He died of heart disease at Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco.
