Linda Ketchum's work as past president of the Gateway Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving won praise Monday from law enforcement officers.

"She wanted to make sure (that) not only were everyday citizens safe, but police officers as well," said the Missouri Law Enforcement Funeral Assistance Team, a group of local police who help families of officers.

Mrs. Ketchum died Friday (April 9, 2010) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital after battling a rare form of bone cancer, her family said. She was 59 and lived in St. Charles.

Her work for MADD began after Feb. 19, 2000. That was the day her daughter Melissa Ketchum, 20, was killed along with two co-workers in a single-car crash in Maryland Heights.
A fourth person was injured. The driver was sentenced to seven years in prison for drunk driving and speeding.

Mrs. Ketchum took her message to students, warning that they don't have to be hit by a stranger in another car to get hurt. She noted that the driver in her daughter's fatal accident was a manager at the restaurant where she worked.

"She was with her friends from work," Mrs. Ketchum told students. "No one is safe in any car."

Mrs. Ketchum helped organize annual law enforcement awards programs. She visited sobriety checkpoints to make sure officers had a warm cup of coffee.

She grew up in St. Louis and graduated from Southwest High School. She met her future husband, John Ketchum, on a blind date at a Blues game.

During the 1980s, she worked for the Cardinals in group ticket sales.

After the death of her daughter, Mrs. Ketchum made blankets and donated them to St. Louis Children's Hospital each Dec. 20, her daughter's birthday. She continued making them in recent months while she was treated for cancer.

Family members said she had already finished the blankets that will be donated in December.

The funeral was Monday at Baue Funeral and Memorial Center Chapel. Burial was at the St. Charles Memorial Gardens.

Among the survivors, in addition to her husband, are a son, Jeremy Ketchum of O'Fallon, Mo.; two daughters, Angela Lanham of Chesterfield and Lindsey Anderson of Ballwin; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Young of Quincy, Ill.; two brothers, Joseph Lombardi Jr. of Ladue and William Lombardi of San Diego; her mother, Angeline Lombardi of St. Louis; and six grandchildren.
