Mr. Wiles was born April 16, 1926, in Rowlsburg, W.Va., a son of the late Harry and Mabel (Trutle) Wiles.
He was a Seaman 1st Class Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Belle Grove in the Pacific Theater.
Richard was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka-Holy Trinity Church, Sharon. Before the merger of St. Stanislaus and Holy Trinity churches, Richard was a very active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, being a trustee and a member of the Holy Name Society.
He was a member of the National Veterans of Foreign Wars; Sharon American Legion, Post 299; and Sawhill Retirees Association; and a founding member of Family & Friends Fantasy Football League for 26 years.
Loving camping, Richard was a member of Plantation Park Association in Mercer.
He was an avid reader and a kind and gentle soul who will be missed by all who knew him.
Richard had worked as a pipefitter at the former Sawhill Tubular Products, Sharon, for more than 30 years, retiring in 1988.
He was the widower of Mary Margaret “Peggy” (Shortencarrier) Wiles, whom he married Aug. 28, 1954. She died Oct. 30, 1996.
Surviving are: his two daughters, Susan L. Janosko and her husband Paul, McMurray, Pa.; and Patricia A. Bears and her husband Michael, Sandy Lake; and two sons, Robert J. Wiles and his wife Stacey, Pulaski; and Randy E. Wiles and his wife Ann, Hermitage.
He also is survived by nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Thomas Wiles and his wife Jean, Butler; and Fred Wiles, California; and a sister-in-law, Catherine Shortencarrier, North Cambria, Pa. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Besides his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Richard H. Wiles, who died Jan. 19, 1973; and his brother, Harry Wiles.
Interment: Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Cemetery, Hermitage, with military honors presented by Sharon American Legion Post 299 Honor Guard.
