Nathaniel Sprague studied theology, and on October 17, 1838, at the age of 48 he received ordination in the Episcopal church from Bishop Hopkins, of Vermont. He officiated for about six years at Royalton, Vermont. Later, he accepted the rector-ship of St. Peter's church, Drewsville, in his native state. In 1847 he earned a Doctor of Divinity degree from Hobart College, at Geneva, New York.
