Named for an uncle and known by the nickname Green, his early boyhood was spent in Washington County, PA. Some sources report birth place as Greensboro PA, but a daughter was told by his brother that he was born near Roscoe. In 1897, his family moved to Gladesville in Preston Co, WV. In that location, he established a local meat business, using a horse and wagon to deliver home-dressed meat. He graduated from Fairmont State Normal School in 1915 and then attended West Virginia University until he was drafted during his junior year for military service. The Thirty Years Ago section of the local newspaper of 7/1/48 stated that his parents received notice of his safe arrival in France. He served there as a PFC with the US Army 80th Infantry Division in front-line trenches in WWI. He returned home and on June 23, 1920, he and Thora Leoti Robinson of Fairmont were married at the home of the bride. Having returned to Morgantown in 1924, he was nominated by the Republican Party and then elected to the WV House of Delegates for a two year term. The photo of Greenland was taken during that time. A color photo would show that he had brown hair and medium blue eyes with a slight hazel tint. In Morgantown, he established several meat markets, some of which closed during the Great Depression. He continued in the meat business until meat rationing during WWII forced closure. Thereafter he became a well-known real estate broker in the Morgantown area and devoted the majority of his time to that endeavor. He was a member of Wesley Methodist Church and Union Lodge No. 4 A. F. & A. Masons. He had five brothers: Joseph Cornelius; George Andrew Jr; Edison Davenport; Orton Dwight, b. Apr 5, 1903; and Alson David, b. Jan 10, 1891 and d. Dec 16, 1891; and four sisters: Alvira (Allie) Gertrude, m. Carl Thompson; Harriet Ann, m. Mason "Mace" Zinn Mar 24, 1905; Clara Beatrice, m. Charles Eeles; and Loretta Blake, b. Jun 9, 1908, m. Oral Johnson. Greenland and Thora had two daughters, Eleanor and Eloise, who received Bachelor of Music degrees from West Virginia University. See also ancestry.com for information about "Green."
