Billy grew up in Wichita Falls, Texas where he enjoyed good friendships, infamous boyhood adventures, motorcycles, and playing football at Wichita Falls High School. Billy studied geology and business and in 1968 he graduated from Midwestern State University, with a Bachelor of Science degree. After serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict, Billy began a career with the Texas Army National Guard, and retired in 1985.
He is preceded in death by his mother Mary Elizabeth Gill and stepfather Burnell Gill, his father Joe Dean Blankenship, and his son-in-law Jack Washburn.
Billy is survived by Billie Blankenship, his wife of 60 years, and their children Beth Blankenship of Austin, Bobbie Washburn of Magnolia, Beckie Harrison and husband Richard of Round Rock, and Boyd Blankenship and wife Kathy of Florence. Other family members include grandchildren Alan Blankenship and wife Kim of Houston, Amanda Washburn of Houston, Nicolas Blankenship of Florence, Michelle Jeter and husband Eric of Houston, James Harrison of Round Rock, Shane Harrison of Round Rock, and great grandchildren Tate Blankenship and Tess Blankenship of Houston.
Interment will take place at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, Killeen, TX.
