After retirement, Vera and Verne travelled to numerous WWII reunions around the country and were blessed with many new friendships. Vera was active in the Roachdale VFW Auxiliary and was a volunteer nurse with the North Putnam Schools. She also loved serving as a chaperone on the North Putnam band trips. Her husband, Verne, passed away in 2009 and she eventually moved into The Hearth at Prestwick in Avon, followed by Bickford Cottage in Lafayette. Vera's sense of humor and signature phrases made her a popular resident.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Verne, her brother Frank Keal, her son Mark Walton and grandson Clayton Spencer. She is survived by her daughter Lisa and husband Kurt Harker of West Lafayette; her daughter Amy and husband Stephen Spencer of North Salem; daughter-in-law Kathy Walton; grandchildren Eric Walton, Haylie Spencer and Kelsey Walton and great-granddaughter Rowen Spencer, all of North Salem.
