He was the son of William Henry Smith (overseer of Bell Plantation next to Jarrell Plantation), and Rhoda Adaline Grubbs. He was the husband of Nancy Holloway Smith. John Thomas Smith moved his family in 1899 from Jasper County to Glovers, Georgia which was later renamed East Juliette A new textile mill was being built so he and his two oldest sons, Henry Cleavy, 13 and Thomas Clark, 11, helped install the machinery in the mill. Their children were Daisy Smith; John Smith; Henry Cleavy Smith; Thomas Clark Smith; Emmie Adeline Smith; Mattie Lee Smith; May Lady Smith; Alonza Grady Smith; Thelma "Lovie" Smith; Dewey Franklin Smith; and Sally Maude Smith. He married Polly Griffin around 1912 and they had one child. He continued to live on the textile mill village until his death from complications of cancer.
