John Raney is Critically Ill Result Injury -

Driver of Car That Hit Raney, Absolved of Blame, According to Report Made Today.

John Raney, 65, bachelor living north of Centerville, is in St. Joseph's hospital in serious condition as the result of being struck by a car driven by Carl Fleming, of Keosauqua at the north end of the river bridge on Primary #60, 5 miles north of Centerville at 4:30 pm yesterday.

The report is that cars were parked on each side of the road north of the bridge and that Raney was walking across between them, at a time when Fleming, driving south, approached the spot. He did not see Raney in time to stop and struck him. Mr. Raney suffered a broken leg, a lacerated hand, and other injuries. R. C. Henderson of Seymour happened to arrive at the scene as the accident occurred and loaded Raney into his car, bringing him to St. Joseph's Hospital here. Fleming followed, and was accompanied by Jerry Mills and Ruth Littke. Fleming said at the hospital that he was in the theatrical business and that he had been at Albia for some time although his home was in Keosauqua. The accident was called unavoidable and no charges have been filed it is said.
