Johnny Carrol Matlock, 86, of Memphis, MO passed away Wednesday afternoon, January 21, 2015, at the Scotland County Hospital in Memphis.
The son of Wallace H. and Nellie Bergthold Matlock he was born January 17, 1929 in Rutledge, MO.
He spent his childhood years around Rutledge and graduated in the class of 1945. On June 16, 1948 he married Lucretia Hustead in Memphis, MO, and to this union three children were born, Nancy, Tom, Marjorie.
John was a strong hard worker and a busy young man hauling ice to houses in Memphis. He bailed hay with a crew of other young men. He went to work for Palmer Implement Co. hauling and delivering machinery. He purchased a truck in 1947 and got a contract with Standard Oil Company delivering fuel oil throughout the county. He then moved to Rock Island, IL and worked for RI Arsenal. After that he went to Electronic School for six years in Quincy, IL and then started Memphis TV and Electric in 1956 until 1971. After retiring he purchased a farm south of Memphis and farmed along with driving a school bus for ten years. He then opened HWI Hardware Store along with Matlock Electric until retiring in early 1990 to travel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mary Matlock, wife, Lucretia, his daughter, Nancy, a grandson, Joseph Moffett.
Surviving relatives include his son, Tom Matlock and his wife Terry of Kahoka, MO; daughter, Marjorie Savage and her husband Tim of Desoto, KS; son-in-law, Steve Moffett of Pesacola, FL; six grandchildren; Emily Lyons, Kevin Moffett, Timothy Moffett, Kris Speer, Tiffany Wood and Tara Fohey along with several great grandchildren; a sister, Gwen Kesselring of Montrose, IA; a brother Gordon Matlock of Montrose, IA; and his longtime friend and companion, Lucille Triplett of Memphis along with nieces, nephews and other relatives and numerous friends.
