Lewis “Luke” Dodwell Adams, Sr., 91, of West Point, died Tuesday, January 20, 2015. Luke was born August 4, 1923 in the family home, the Maull-Hutchinson House in Troup County, Georgia, the son of Louise Ward and Charlie D. Adams.
Mr. Adams was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Army Air Forces in stateside training assignments.
Luke Adams began school in 1929 at the Lucy Russell School in Whitesburg, Carroll County, Georgia. The family returned to the Gray Hill Community of Troup County where Luke entered the 5th grade, graduating from Gray Hill School in May, 1940. Luke then worked for his great-uncle, Oscar Hutchinson in Atlanta as a shipping clerk in the electrical supply business before joining the military in 1942. He served as a simulator trainer operator during the war in Florida, South Carolina and Alabama.
After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army Air Forces at Maxwell Field near Montgomery, Alabama, Luke returned home to West Point and went back to Atlanta to work at Westinghouse. He met his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Fanning, and they married in Atlanta. The couple moved to Athens for Luke to attend the University of Georgia on the GI Bill. He received a commission in the Army Air Forces Reserve as a second lieutenant.
Following his graduation from the university with a BS degree in agriculture, he, his wife and their young son Lewis Dodwell, Jr. returned to Gray Hill to his family’s 150 acre farm working in partnership with his father raising timber, cattle and vegetables—“truck farming.” Later on he bought, cut and sold timber with Dudley Lankford, Jamie Miller and Hal Gordon. His first marriage ended in divorce. Luke went back to school and earned education credentials, becoming principal of Cataula Elementary School in Cataula, Georgia near Columbus. There he met and married Joan Duke in 1972; that marriage ended with Jo’s death in 1995.
Luke was a member of Bethel Methodist Church, West Point Presbyterian Church, serving on the session, Davidson Baptist Church, Reed’s Chapel Baptist Church, Oakside Baptist Church and Gray Hill Baptist Church. He enjoyed teaching Sunday School, studying the Bible and visiting other churches.
In his 80s he took a law course at Auburn University. He always continued to farm his land, and enjoyed his six children, 17 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and the many extended family members and friends in his community.
Luke Adams was preceded in death by his parents, Louise and Charlie D. Adams and first cousins Jackie Garner Alton, Frost Ward, Harvey Cotton, Eugene Cotton and Annie Lewis Cotton Clark.
He is survived by his six children:
