Joseph A. Coates, 83, early soldier of this city and a Black Hawk Indian War veteran, died at an early hour after a long illness, following a paralytic stroke two years ago.
Mr. Coates was born in Sheffield, England, July 2, 1852, a son of John and Sarah Higginbottom Coates. He emigrated to America in 1863, coming directly to Utah and settled in Mt. Pleasant the same year.
He was married to Mary Elizabeth Zabriskie in the Endowment house in Salt Lake City in 1877. She died March 23, 1898. After her death he was married in 1901 to Mary Allen Farnsworth, who died in 1920.
Surviving are four sons and two daughters. George W. Coates, Richfirld, Idaho; Mrs. Ethel C. Spens Kolstrom and Alma Coates, Mt. Pleasant; Justin A. and Hyrum J. Coates, Nampa, Idaho, and Mrs. Grace Coates Blackwall, Onray, Idaho; 32 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
