Audra Lucille Pettyjohn Stewart, 97, of Tampa, Fla., and formerly of Bristol, Va., died Wednesday, January 14, 2015. Mrs. Stewart was born November 25, 1917, one of six children, to D.O. and Mamie Pettyjohn. She grew up in the Three Springs community outside of Bristol, Va. After graduating from Radford Teachers' College in 1938, she established her career as a kind, thorough and patient teacher of Latin and English at Radford High School, in Washington County Schools, and at Virginia Junior High School. Lucille was involved in civic and professional organizations, serving as President of the local Civinettes. She was active in her church at Euclid Avenue Baptist Church and later at First Baptist Church in Bristol. Most recently she was a member of Temple Terrace United Methodist Church in Tampa, Fla. After she retired, Lucille and her husband Carl, enjoyed gardening and traveling nationally and internationally. They spent their last years in a retirement center in Tampa, Fla., where she made many friends through interviewing interesting residents there and publishing her feature articles in the resident newsletter. Since she was always curious and eager to learn, Lucille's favorite hobby was reading, right up until the time of her death. Lucille was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Carlton Stewart. Her survivors include her son, Lynn Stewart and his wife Sandra, of Roanoke, Va.; daughter, Emily Stewart of Chicago, Ill.; daughter, Carol Stewart Gay and her husband Bill, of Charlotte, N.C.; son, Kenneth Stewart and his wife Nan, of Richmond, Va.; one grandson, Jonathan Stewart and his wife Christi; and four granddaughters, Jennifer Stewart Purcell and her husband Eric, Heather Gay, Lauren Stewart and Shelby Stewart. She also had three great-grandsons, Jacob and Noah Stewart and Luke Purcell. In addition, she is survived by several nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth Stewart Bailey and Ernestine Stewart. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m., Friday, January 23, 2015 at Akard Funeral Home with The Reverend Laura Plaster of Reynolds Memorial Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow the service at Mountain View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m., Thursday, January 22, 2015 at the funeral home.
