Karen Ruth Rapp Mayes Burke was born in Fair Lawn, N.J. on March 5, 1952 to Catherine Selina Flood and Robert Rapp Sr. and passed away peacefully on January 18, 2015.

She graduated from Fair Lawn High School in 1970 and then attended The University of Oklahoma, to be near her beloved brother. Although she began college by majoring in piano performance, she changed her major and received a B.A. degree in English Literature in 1975.

Karen then returned to college and earned an M.S.W. degree from OU in 1982. She worked as a social worker for many years at DHS, specializing in child abuse investigations. She later became a medical social worker at Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City in oncology and nephrology. She was on the first kidney transplant team at Children’s and began the first group for grieving parents. She then began her private practice in 1999. In 2003 she began training as a psychoanalyst, attending The Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California, and worked as a psychoanalyst in private practice in Norman, after graduating in 2011.

In addition to her talent as an artist, Karen loved music and played the piano. She also had a true and deep love for the ocean, and spent her early summers on the New Jersey Shore. She wrote poetry and was an avid reader. She was a survivor of childhood abuse and devoted her professional life of over 30 years to helping others with emotional issues and trauma. She often said that being in psychoanalysis herself changed her life. Her mentor was Sondra Shehan, M.S.W., Psychoanalyst.

Karen had two beloved children, twins. She was preceded in death by her beloved son Ross in 2007. She is survived by her husband, brother, a grand–niece and a grand-nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved aunt and namesake, Ruth Sivil Barden and her maternal grandparents, John and Mary Flood.

Karen battled severe lung disease for many, many years.

Graveside services are 9:30 a.m. Friday, January 23, 2015 at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Norman, Oklahoma. Memorial services will follow at 11:00 a.m. Friday at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church in Norman.
