An Olympic gold medalist and career soldier. He was born in Finland but in a southern region where the population was divided equally between Finns and Swedes. He chose to make a career in the Swedish army where he served with distinction from 1887 to 1918.

He resigned from the army then served in the Finnish Civil War, taking on high ranking responsibilities till 1920. And when the Soviet Union invaded Finland in 1940 in the Winter War he again answered the call and served in the Finnish army.

He won his Olympic gold medal in the individual dressage horse-riding event in the 1924 Games.
