George W. Reid was 23, and living in Rockville, Delaware Co., Iowa, when he first enlisted as a Private in the 4th Iowa Cavalry on Sept. 23, 1861. He was initially rejected by the mustering officer. He almost immediately re-enlisted, and was accepted as a Private in Co. B of the 4th Iowa Cavalry.

On Jan. 18, 1862, he was promoted as the Commissary Sergeant for the 3rd Battalion. Reid was later discharged due to disability on May 14, 1862, at Springfield, Missouri.

Reid applied for his Civil War pension on Nov. 17, 1905. His application is #1,342,349, and his certificate #1,116,347. Following his death, his wife, Mary L, applied for her widow’s pension. Her application is #856,545,, and her certificate #635,558.

Prior to his death, Reid was an engineer. He died as a result of Cholameia, a disease of the common duct causing excess bile in the blood.
