John S. Nunes, 66-year-old resident of Fortuna, died on Sunday evening in a Fortuna hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born on December 25, 1892, in the Azores, coming to the United States and Beatrice at the age of 17 years. He had resided in Fortuna since 1952. For most of his lifetime, he was a self-employed dairy rancher, and for about four years before his retirement, had been employed by Humboldt Creamery association as a field man. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church of Fortuna, Council No. 138 of the IDES lodge of Ferndale, Council No. 6 of the APPB lodge of Ferndale, a charter member and former director of the Humboldt Creamery association for more than 24 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Teresa Nunes of Fortuna; sons, Tony J. Nunes of Ferndale; John J. Nunes of Fortuna, Ernest D. Nunes of Loleta; daughters Mrs. Mary Alameda of Fortuna and Mrs. Dervalena Weis of Petaluma; sisters, Mrs. Mary Lorenzo of Ferndale and Mrs. Herminia Freitas, also of Ferndale; 13 grandchildren, and numerous other relatives.
Rosary will be recited on Tuesday at 8:30 P.M. in the chapel of Goble's Fortuna Mortuary, with the Rev. T. V. Burke officiating. Friends will assemble in the mortuary on Wednesday at 9:30 A.M. and proceed to St. Joseph's Catholic church in Fortuna where requiem mass will be offered at 10 A.M. Interment will follow at St. Bernard's cemetery, Eureka.
Active pallbearers will be John Petersen, Frank Rocha, Joe Gomes, Antone Oliver, Joe F. Brazil and Tony Luis. Honorary pallbearers are Ronald Giullieri, John Soattini, Fred Bravo and Robert Payne.
