CAROL JEAN SMALL
Carol Jean Small, age 71, a lifelong resident of Elwood, died peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood after an extended illness.
She was born May 30, 1943 in Elwood, the daughter of Robert M. "Tar" and Frances "Jean" (Elliott) Robertson.
She was a secretary for the Elwood Community School Corporation working in the Middle School office for more than 20 years, and retired in 2005. Carol attended St. Joseph School in Elwood and graduated in 1961 from Wendell L. Willkie High School.
She married Terry Lee Small on August 26, 1961 and they shared over 49 years of marriage together.
She was raised in the St. Joseph Catholic Church, and was formerly active with the Lady Elks in Elwood. Carol enjoyed needlepoint, antiques, auctions, decorating her home; and was a well-known Elwood historian. She will be remembered for never missing a sporting event when one of her grandchildren was playing; and she considered herself a life-long "Elwood Panther" fan. During her many years of working in the middle school, Carol was known to have a special intuition for children who needed help, and she privately helped hundreds of kids for many years. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
Carol's family includes 3 sons, Rex (wife Madonna) Small of Elwood, Brian Small of Elwood, and Shawn Small of St. Petersburg, FL; sister, Nancy (husband Chip) Bishop of Kissimmee, FL; 10 grandchildren Terra (husband Kyle) Foor, Tiffany Smoot, Timothy Smoot, Ryan Small, Robi Small, Dustin Drake, Jordan Beeman, Malachi Beeman, Katelyn Grant, and Brittany Strong; 9 great-grandchildren, Kyla Foor, Kaysen Foor, Elijah Small, Daniel Small, Jaylyn Small, Ian Hoppenrath, Jayden Davenport, Bryleigh Strong, and Chloe Marlow; special family member, Carol Smoot, who was like a daughter to Carol; several special brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and best friend, Regina Collins of Elwood.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Terry Lee Small who died October 25, 2010.
A funeral service celebrating Carol's life will be conducted at 1:30 on Friday, January 23, 2015 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev. Roger Gardner and Tom Austin officiating. Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral home prior to the funeral service on Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association through the funeral home.
