Charles was born in the Going Snake District of the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory (now Delaware County, Oklahoma.) He is the son of Daniel Martin and Mary (Hicks) Ward.

Charles married Mary Katheryn Weston on August 18, 1932 in Jay, Oklahoma. They were married in the living room of a local Justice of the Peace. Together they had two children, Charles Henry Ward and Freddie Lee Ward and seven grandchildren.

Charles was affectionately known as "Tiny" by his friends and family. He was a registered citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and was 1/32 Cherokee by Blood. In 1907 he was allotted land by the Dawes Commission which he held until his death. He is a descendant to Chief Old Hop and his Cherokee linage is documented back to the 1750s.

During the Great Depression Tiny worked in Roosevelt's New Deal work program, the PWA (Public Works Administration) and the Grand Coulee Dam construction project in Washington state. Tiny helped to lay the railway leading to the construction site, lifting and placing the wooden railroad ties.

In 1938, the couple immigrated West to Arizona where he worked for his brother George Ward as a truck driver. During the 1950s and 1960s he worked for the Salt River Project as a private Zanjero running irrigation water as well as operating a private tillage business with Mary. He worked for many large citrus farms in the Arcadia and Biltmore districts of North Phoenix up until his retirement in the early 1970s.

Charles and Mary were members of the First Wesleyan Church where they attended until their deaths.
