Navy Fireman (E-3) Jakia S. Cannon of Baltimore had only been on board the USS Enterprise for one month, and she was already singing in the choir, and singing in the ship talent show. That would hardly be a surprise to her friends back home at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Baltimore, where she sang in the choir and acted as an usher. She boarded the "Big E" when it deployed out of Norfolk, Virginia in September, 2003, headed to the Persian Gulf to support operations in Iraq. She held the rank of E-3 fireman. The 20 year old Jakia made the most of her cruise, making many friends and running track in Italy. She is not the only member of her family to serve in the Navy. Her uncle is an Information Systems Technician 1st Class, and had orders to report to Enterprise in February of 2004. She died of natural causes while underway in the Persian Gulf at age 20.
