Dr. Elna Anne Lombard, age 88 Entered into rest Saturday April 29, 2006 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Roswell Harmon and Anne Schmidt Lombard. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday May 3, 2006 at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection with Rev. David Hunter and Rev. Charles Koons officiating. Interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery. Dr. Lombard was a native and life long residence of Augusta, GA. She graduated from Tubman High School in 1932 and after that attended Augusta Junior College and won a part-time teaching scholarship at Shorter College in Rome, GA then completing her bachelor's degree at Peabody College in Nashville, TN with a dual major and dual minor in 1937. She returned to Augusta and taught at Tubman High School for three years, during which she earned her pilot license. Dr. Lombard then joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC) in 1942 and was discharged as a Captain in 1946. An encounter with an army chaplain began her life-long walk with Christ. Using the GI Bill she did graduate work in physiology at the University of Wisconsin receiving a M.S. and PH.D. Returning again to Augusta she held a research position with the Medical College of Georgia after completing the requirements she was awarded her M.D. She was then offered a career residence in psychiatry and in 1964 became the Director of Mental Health Center in Aiken serving until 1979. After serving as the Director of Mental Health Center in Augusta she began a private practice in her home in Hepzibah. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, the Green Meadows Golf Club, Georgia State Ladies Golf Association, Georgia Seniors Ladies Golf Association, Georgia Senior Couples Golf Association, and was a former Georgia Ladies and Senior Ladies Champion and Past President of all the above. Dr. Lombard was a member of the American Legion Post #205 Augusta and the Augusta Green Jackets Diamond Club. She was a life member of the American Psychiatric Association and past president and member of numerous veteran and other professional medical associations. Survivors include her dear companion for 47 years, Margaret Holley, Hepzibah; cousin Kay S. Odell her husband William, Winter Park, FL; special friends, Rev. David and Kathie Hunter, Mary Jo Holley, Alma Lucky and Donnie Chavous. Pallbearers will be, Jim Thouvenot, Keith Dyer, Bryan Hunter, Frank Chandler, Ray Frei, David Harbeson. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Lutheran Church of the Resurrection 825 Greene Street, Augusta, GA. 30901 or to Regency Hospice 105 Summerwood Way, Suite D, Aiken, SC, 29803.
